Description: The odd-denomination 3¢ piece played an important role in America’s economic recovery following the Civil War. It helped make change, bought postage stamps (which were 3¢) and retired the fractional notes. With recovery well under way, not as many three-cent pieces were needed, so in 1874, the Philadelphia Mint struck just 790,000.
