The US stamp, promoting the Pacific 97 International philatelic exhibition, commemorates 150th anniversary U.S. postage stamps. U.S. #2, a tribute to George Washington, was one of two stamps in the first-ever general American issue. It was placed on sale July 1st, 1847.
Along with facilitating the handling of mail, the main benefit of government-issue stamps was increased accountability. The new postage stamps were issued to postmasters on account, for sale to the public. As a result, they provided an accurate check on postal revenues that had not previously been possible.
Beloved as the “father of his country, “George Washington was a logical choice to be honored on the inaugural U.S. issues. Further, he played an important role in postal history. After Congress created the Post Office Department on September 22, 1789, Washington appointed the first three postmasters general: Samuel Osgood in 1789, Timothy Pickering in 1791, and Joseph Habersham in 1795.
The first known use of the U.S. #2 was our mail postmarked July 2, 1847. Its likeness of Washington was a reproduction of the famed Athenaeum portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart. that same design appears on the 1997 stamp, which is printed in red instead of black. Also, the new version has been re-engraved with the current 60-cent denomination. The 1847 stamp had a denomination of ten cents.
