Description:  Whether it’s at the plate, or in the field or on the base-path, Willie excels at what he’s doing. The Giants’ centerfielder was the National League rookie of the year in 1951. In his first full season with the club in ’54, after coming out of the military service. Willie won the batting title for his .345 mark.  The following year the exciting Star had another fine campaign as he led the N.L. with 13 triples and 51 home runs. Quick as a flash on the bases, Willie stole 40 bases in 1956. The pride of the Giants had his greatest day at the plate on April 30th, 1961, when he crashed 4 home runs in a game against the Milwaukee Braves. It isn’t just talk when a sports writer says that Willie rises to the occasion. In 11 All-Star contests, the dynamic ballplayer has compiled 0.425 batting average.
